What Happened to PerlerPal?

As you might have noticed, perlerpal.com is no more.  I recently got contacted by some lawyers that stated that I was infringing on the Perler® trademark by using that within the website name.  I was a little shocked, but knowing what I do about trademark laws, I know that you have to fight for them to keep them.  I wasn’t too bent out of shape about it, as it’s not like I make any money from the site.   The odd thing is, when I created the tool (way before transferring it to it’s own domain), I didn’t even think about the infringement.  I thought that it sounded good, and just went with it.  I had created it for me, my kids, and the rest of the internets to be able to make “Melty bead creations” easier.

After a couple of days of noodling, I my wife came up with MyPixelPal.com.  I moved everything over and changed links wherever I could find them to the new location.  In a way, this was a good change.  Since the tool can be used for other crafts (cross-stitch, LEGO® bricks, other melty-beads), it makes sense for it to have a more generic name.  The new site doesn’t have any of the new features I’m planning, but at least it’s now no longer infringing.   Please let me know if you find anything broken with the new site.

Thanks a lot for that tool , very usefull with Hama beads !
I submited by error a personnal picture without knowing that it will be shared.
Is it possible to remove it as I don’t really like the fact of having private pics shared on the web :)

Thanks for the comment – if you let me know which one it is (click on it from the images page, and get the filename), I can delete it for you. When I get the new site done, all reference images will be private, so you wouldn’t have this problem.

It is that one : phpWZh4jK.gif
    Thank you Ed :)

I have removed the file. Hopefully you get use from the program even though it’s public (for now).

    Wow, that sucks!

    Kind of ridiculous, too.

i did find you through perlerpal and sad to hear that you lost your domain but still its correct of them to protect their trademark. But good to see that the site is up again!

Anyway..i miss some kind of instructions on how to upload it. i know a lot of other people are also asking for it.

The mushroom you have at the first picture is 16×16, but if i take a picture from the net and resize it with f.ex Photoshop to 16×16 i just get quite blurry. What is your tip when trying to upload pictures from my favorite characters f.ex Mario (in a shoe)? :P

Arildm, thanks for your post – the issue that most images that you get from the net is that they’ve been enlarged to be able to see them better. MyPixelPal deals with images on a pixel-by-pixel basis, so those images would be way too huge to use. To compound things, many people use JPEGs to save them after resizing, which will introduce artifacts. It is possible to resize down to the proper size, but it would probably just be easier to find a proper version of the image you’re looking for. If you do an images search for “mario sprite sheets”, you should be able to find what you’re looking for – you’d just need to crop out the exact sprite you’re looking for. In the new version of the site, I’m planning on providing some tools to be able to help with this, but until then, you can use standard image editing software. Good luck!
