MyPixelPal v. 1.6 Released

I’ve released version 1.6 of MyPixelPal.  Nothing major in this release, just minor bugfixes, like the bead counts not showing up.   Please let me know if you see any other issues.

  • Omega71

Is the site still down? It comes up as a Russian Search site now.

  • Anonymous

Omega71, mypixelpal.com comes up as a Russian search site for you?

  • Cisrael8123

IT comes up Russian search for me too!!

It appears that my webhost got hacked, and this was fallout from it.  Thanks for reporting it guys.  It looks like it’s under control at this point, but I’m more vigilant now :)

    • Cisrael8123

Thanks!!  So it should be back up and running again soon??

  • Silversnorlax204

Looking at the posts, it appears that MyPixelPal is down for right now?

Every time i try to upload an image (i’ve tried several browsers as well as computers) It comes up as an “Invalid Image”

I would love updates when they are possible, thank you!

Both mypixelpal and the blog have been reinstalled on a new vhost (didn’t want to take any chances), and everything seems to be working fine.  Please let me know if you guys see anything broken.  Thanks!

  • Cisrael8123

I tried to get on to mypixelpal this morning and it’s still doing the Russian Search…is there something I’m doing wrong??

    • Anonymous

Hmm, it should be fixed.  Perhaps it maybe coming from cache?   Try a different browser and/or clear your cache.  I just checked, and there’s no bad stuff on there that I can find.

      • Cisrael8123

Thank you!!  Clearing my cache worked…Thanks again!!

  • Jcjimenez

I’ve tried to save a couple of palettes and when I load them they appear with no colors.

  • Anonymous

Hey guys, sorry for the hiccups lately, I’ve been trying to harden the webserver and PHP and keep breaking things :)  Please bear with me.

  • Anonymous

Jcjimenez, I’ve recreated the issue and should have a fix soon.  Thanks!

    • Jcjimenez

Thx a lot! Great application btw :)

  • Anonymous

Jcjimenez – I have put in a fix for the palette issue.  Please let me know if there’s any issues.  I also made the palettes be in alpha order.  Sorry for the delay, had a busy week :)

  • Cisrael8123

I’m having problems changing the cell size…I change the number and it goes right back to 2 again.

  • Anonymous

Cisrael8123, this should be fixed now.  Try and let me know if you have any more issues.  Thanks!

    • Cisrael8123

      Thank you very much!!

    Hi!
I love MyPixelPal, it’s just what I have been looking for. I just have some problemes with the images, there are always to many beads. I know I’m doing something wrong, but I don’t know how to get a smaller amount of beads (around 250-500 beads). Need some help :)
    Thanks

    • Anonymous

Sophie, thanks for the post.  In order to help, what image are you using?

      • Sophie1592

For example, if I want a Hello Kitty image, I just type Hello Kitty in Google and take whaterver image comes out of that search. Do I need to specify the search?

Most likely the issue you’re running into is the fact that you’re trying to use an image that is too large.   One thing that you’ll find is that images on the net aren’t always the best thing to use for a beadcraft project, in that they’re about 100 times too large.  Something you can do is add “sprite” to your query, which should yield some images that are decent sized, with limited color palettes, no antialiasing (which causes issues with the edges, and just a better reference image.  You’ll most likely find lots of “sprite sheets”, which are an image in many different poses, for use in animation – these are fine, but you’ll probably want to use an image editor to crop them down (or just ignore the bits you don’t care about in MyPixelPal) – I’m planning on having a tool to be able to cut up and crop images in the next version of MyPixelPal to deal with this issue.  If you’re still having trouble, let me know and I can give you some specific example images.

          • Sophie1592

I have searched for Mario sprites but I don’t know how to crop them down. And if I put them in the program they just get blurry… A specific example would be very helpfull :)
            Thanks

Sophie, here’s a good example image: http://www.freewebs.com/gamemakerror/smb3shet.gif  If you load it into mypixelpal, it is a huge image, but you can probably find the section of what you want to build.  You will most likely need to change the cell size to something bigger than 1 to actually see the image.    The size you’re looking for in the images is in the 16×16 range.   If you know what you want to make, you can use image editing software, such as XNView (there are countless other ones as well) to find the area you want to work on and crop it.  You don’t want to *resize* images, as most likely the result will be blurry and unusable.  The key is to start with the original size (which is typically about 16×16, depending on which platform – NES, SNES, etc.)   On modern computers, 16×16 is tiny and hard to see, so people resize them to 10+ times what they were originally, and then save them in a format like JPEG, which loses information.  A great example of this is http://art.ngfiles.com/images/4/simple_mario-sprite.jpg  – this is *not* what you want to be using as a source image, nor do you want to try and resize it back down to the original size.  Start small, and crop if you need.   Also, if you do end up cropping them, save them as PNG or GIF format, which is considered “lossless”, and it shouldn’t mess with your image.  Hopefully this explanation helps.   Good luck and have fun!

  • Jansl4ever

Why can’t I use this program on my iPad.

    • Anonymous

Jansl4ever, at the time I wrote it, I didn’t have iPads or iPhones in mind.  I own an iPad and will make sure that it works with it when I release the new version.  Thanks.

  • LittleMRM

Is there any way to get it to show up in original colors? This would be helpful to cross stitchers who want to match the threads to colors instead of using beads.

    • Anonymous

LittletMRM – thanks for the comment – Right now, I don’t have a method to show original colors in a grid.  I’ll make that a feature of the new version (which I’m working on at the moment).

  • David “Trellix”

Thank you Ed. This is just what I was looking for. Site works great on an android tablet. Having each 29×29 grid a diffrent color really helped on a larger project. I’ll never go back to using MS Paint at 800% zoom again!

  • Rebeca Capon

Hi! How can I delete my photografy from view recent images??? Thanks

    • Anonymous

Rebecca, unfortunately there’s no way for end users to delete images on the site at this time.  If you let me know which image you’d like to remove, I’ll remove it.  Thanks!

      • Rebeca Capon

Thanks ed! Don´t worry,  maybe I will be famous being on your site. jejeje It is a good program. Sorry by my english.

  • Ashleighmac

Whenever I try to upload a picture, the grid where I’m assuming that the colors of the perler beads should be is just a gray and black checkerboard pattern. Help?

  • Ratepe

Why don’t you accept .TGA :(

  • Sunny

Minor Suggestion: In the chart showing bead counts, have a number next to each color representing the bead color number in the current palette.  (When the numbers are showing in the diagram, it is not always obvious which color it refers to, especially when there are very similar colors.  I end up having to go to the palette editor to count colors.)

Odd Behavior: When an image (GIF) has transparency and I show color numbers, the cells get all weird sized and the font gets small.  If I fill the area with any color and resubmit, the cells are fine.  Maybe fill the transparent cells with dashes – so that sizing works?

    • edsalisbury

Sunny, thanks for your comment, sorry for my delayed response.  I have a fix for the first issue, but I’m not seeing the behavior you’re mentioning for the transparent images.  What browser are you using?

      • Sunny

So this is what it looks like: http://i.imgur.com/JMLSl.gif
The one on the left is your sample image (saved as GIF), and the one on the right is the sample image with the white portions removed and saved as a transparent GIF.  You can see the distortion on the second one.  (Win7, Firefox 11.0, Opera 11.62)

upon viewing the source, the “normal” cells have html like this:
        1

        the transparent cells have this:

        source:
        your sample image: http://i.imgur.com/cZpKU.gif
        transparentized image: http://i.imgur.com/bSNuI.gif

If you need more details, just let me know.

  • Eric

Hello I used a photo of my little brother and now do not know how to delete it and do not like the whole world to see, sorry for my English, thank very much

    • edsalisbury

Eric, I’ve deleted a couple of recent images of what could be little brothers.  If I did not get yours successfully, please let me know which one it is and I will delete it.  Thanks!

      • Eric

        thank you so much!

  • Eddie

    how do you work this?

  • Tylerherpderp

Could you make the “Recent Image” page have an option to view X amount of images per page or something?

    • edsalisbury

Tyler, the recent images is really just a way to find recent images others have uploaded. The page stays at a pretty steady size since images are purged after a week. In a future update, I plan on having the ability to only view images you have uploaded (which wouldn’t be deleted unless you delete them) – this should make this a bit more manageable.

  • vicki

How can I change the grid size? Thanks

    • edsalisbury

Vicki, unfortunately the grid size is fixed at the moment. I will be adding the ability to change it in a future update. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • R Skse

Great work on this man, its very useful! Anxiously awaiting the ability to change the pixel size/count in a future update..

  • Arthur

    Very nice and helpful tool!
Is there a chance to get adjustable pegboard sizes and exports to .jpg/.png etc. in future updates?

    • Arthur

Oh, and a measurement in inch / centimeters would be very helpful for large projects, too.

  • George

    Feature request/suggestion:
upon mouseover, in addition to showing a tooltip with the color name, it would be nice if there was an option to give some sort of highlight to all other beads of that particular color on the grid.  Currently I’m working on an image with lots of very similar shades of blue (two in particular…Light blue and Pastel blue in the Perler palette,) and it really strains your eyes trying to eye it up.  This feature would be extremely helpful in this particular situation, and others, I’m sure.

  • Christina

MPP has been working well for me, but since yesterday, when I try to submit my image, it doesn’t load anything. Any ideas as to why, or is there a bug? Really need the site to be back up so I can get my stuff done! Thanks! :)

    • edsalisbury

Christina, please try again – ran out of disk space and I deleted some stuff. Should be good to go now. Thanks!
